3 Ways to Wear: The Pinny Dress

I'm finally back to sharing more Style Tips on the blog and today, I will be posting another installment of my 3 Ways to Wear series featuring this red and black houndstooth Pinny dress from Dorothy Perkins.

Part of their A/W16 STYLE HEROES collection, the Pinny dress (otherwise known as the pinafore) is the ultimate in versatility. Whether you want to elevate your look with a dressy blouse or go casual in a simple tee, transforming your outfit is as easy as switching the tops you wear it with. Read on as I show you how to style this season's must-have pinafore in three different ways:

Look 1: Fall Style in the Tropics
Just because we don't have four seasons doesn't mean we can't style our looks accordingly. So what's the best way to sport cool weather outfits whilst in the tropics? Instead of piling layers and layers of clothes, the trick is to choose garments that have an Autumn/ Winter feel.

Think earthy muted palettes (grey, military green, rust;) jewel tone accents (ruby, emerald, sapphire;) and classic seasonal prints (plaid, leopard and houndstooth.)

For this outfit, I made my houndstooth pinafore tropical weather appropriate by wearing it on its own as a dress. And in keeping with Autumn's neutral hues, I went for brown accessories in both leather and suede.

With its ultra chic retro silhouette and old-school Scottish check pattern, the Pinny is a great way to inject Fall trends no matter the climate.

Look 2: 1960s-Inspired Office Outfit
Bored with the same old pencil skirt and tailored jacket office attire? Step up your workwear game by channeling 1960s vintage fashion into your 9 to 5 looks.

I achieved this mod-inspired outfit by pairing the Pinny dress with a thin chiffon button-down. Lighter fabrics are great for layering as they help minimise bulge and are less prone to wrinkling.

In true 60s fashion, I went for matching white heels.

Instead of wearing the decade's quintessential square toe shoes, I put a modern spin into this look by choosing a more current footwear style: cut-out pointed toe stilettos.

Look 3: Cozy Autumnal Layers
Traveling anytime soon? This third ensemble is pefect to wear on a trip to Europe or Japan in the colder months.

One of my favourite ways of restyling a dress is by turning it into a skirt. Simply throw on a top (in this case, a long sleeve turtleneck) and you've got yourself a brand new outfit.

My suggestion is to go for a loose fitting turtleneck so it's not obvious you're wearing a dress underneath. Don't worry if you don't have a slouchy knit sweater, you can always raid your husband/ boyfriend's closet like I did. ;)

To complete the look, I selected two accessories: black ankle strap patent block heels and a red mini top handle bag.
